Mr. AWA from Syria visited Yazaemon the 5th in 1952 to ask the production of 27cm diameter bowl.
Since then, we delivered 20-foot container full (about 3000 pieces) to Syria every 3 years till 2010.

As a similar bowl can be found in the drawing by British painter John Everett Millais, it is possible that exported old Imari was the origin of this design. There are also Islamic pattern.

27cm diameter bowl is large and deep, but not so heavy as it is made thin, and makes a nice sound when flicked with a finger.

Such large bowl requires highly advanced technique to produce without distortion.
However, export was unfortunately interrupted after the civil war broke out in Syria.
Our AWA BOWL was featured in the TV program "The World of Aritayaki" created by NHK Saga to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Arita porcelain in 2016.
The comedian Mr. Matsuo of The Buguru, who is also the cousin of Yazaemon the 7th, went to Jordan to find out the usage of AWA BOWL for this TV program.

It was found in the program that it was a trousseau to be passed to daughter when a woman gets married in Syria.

There is a proverb in Syria to say "a talented person can make good sound like the AWA BOWL when flicked with a finger".

We pray that war will end and peace will come to Syria, and hope to deliver our AWA BOWL again.
